The Best Face Sunscreens for Summer 2021
While I’ve tried several sunscreens over the last couple of years (drugstore and high-end), I’ve narrowed it down to the five best sunscreens, in my opinion, that I personally love and use on a regular basis. I have fair skin that typically burns first and then tans later, which is why I always carry sunscreen with me.
Dr. Dennis Gross Dark Spot Sun Defense SPF 50 ($42)
This product provides great sunblock coverage. If you struggle with hyperpigmentation, the vitamin C and glycol acid will work to diminish dark spots while the olive and almond oils will moisturize and condition for a healthy complexion. Since this is a physical sunscreen it does leave a white cast.
Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 ($34)
This is my go-to sunscreen right now as I use it before I apply my Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. It doubles as a primer because it fills my pores and grips my makeup so well. It’s an invisible, scentless sunscreen so no need to worry about white cast or greasy texture. This has a natural finish so it won’t look dewy nor matte and it’s perfect for full-face makeup days.
Supergoop Glowscreen SPF 40 ($36)
Supergoop offers quite a few sunscreens with different finishes and as someone that loves a dewy complexion, Glowscreen seemed right up my alley. I took this with me on my vacation to Deep Creek Lake. It was the perfect option to wear for afternoon boat rides when the sun is strong. Lately my skin has been mostly clear and healthy (thankfully!) but I wouldn’t recommend this for anyone that has acne-prone skin as this will easily highlight any and all imperfections.
Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35 ($25)
It’s a lightweight water-gel formula that feels and looks like a serum and doesn’t leave any white cast. It does have a bit of a citrus scent, which I personally like. I’ve seen mixed reviews on whether this is a good option for acne prone skin; however, this has never caused breakouts for me. I can only speak to my experience though. Compared to Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, I don’t find this to be as good of a makeup gripping primer so I keep this handy for my lighter makeup days.
Alchimie Forever Protective Day Cream SPF23 ($69)
This is the only daily protective moisturizer I’ve tried that effectively doubles as sunscreen for the face. It’s a bit pricey compared to the others but if you have aging concerns, very dry or sensitive skin, this will be worth every penny. It provides broad-spectrum UV protection as it seamlessly melts onto skin and it has a very mild, floral scent. I’ll also apply this on my hands to keep them looking nice and healthy.
