File this makeup trend under something that shouldn’t work, but it does. Meet the glossy lid.
Here’s what I find confusing: I’ve only known since eye makeup 101 that you always apply eyeshadow primer to prevent… exactly what I’m wearing now… glossy lids. I probably didn’t need this YSL Eye Gloss Smudger since my lids could produce enough oil to fill your gas tank, but I just needed to try this trend for myself. So with that, here’s how to pull off glossy lids.
Here’s a quick breakdown: This tiny tube of gloss adds a shiny finish that you can layer on top of eyeshadow for a lived-in look. Emphasize lived-in.
When I think of that sultry, slightly messy on-purpose eye look I think of “morning after makeup.” You know, when you’re too lazy to take your makeup off and you wake up and you’re astounded that your ink black eyeliner only smudged a bit and somehow you look effortlessly cool? Like Cara Delevingne cool.
Anyways, I’ve been testing this product a few different ways and here’s what I’ve discovered:
A little goes a long way. If you apply too much gloss, then it will smear any liner you’ve just applied/been wearing. And then you look like a raccoon and that’s not fun.
It looks really good on top of powder shadow—matte or shimmer. Stila Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Kitten has been a long-time staple in my makeup bag. It easily translates for work or weekend and the neutral champagne shimmer makes it worth with any outfit. With just a tiny dot of this YSL gloss, it amps up my eye look. Hello, happy hour!
If a glossy lid sounds like eye makeup blasphemy (and I won’t blame you if you think that), then use it as a clear highlighter under your brow or on your cheekbones. Just another beauty product to help you look like a freshly glazed Krispy Kreme Donut.

Glossy eyes tend to be a makeup look most of us love but feel we could never wear in real life. I hated my glossy lids back in the days but now, after reading your post I kinda feel like trying it.
