An Update On My Clean Beauty Collection & Routine

DC Beauty Blog Politics of Pretty | Clean Beauty Collection & Routine

It’s crazy to look back on old blog posts from years prior and see how much my beauty routine has evolved. My routine has changed so much thanks to investing more time and research into clean and non-toxic beauty.

I thought it would be helpful to share an update on my clean beauty collection and my current (primarily skincare) routine. My goal is to achieve an 80/20 clean beauty routine by the end of the year. I feel like that’s doable in the skincare/hair department but I’m struggling on the makeup side (more on that later).

As for skincare/body/hair, here’s an update on my collection and what I’ve been using:

Skincare

Tatcha Skincare: I understand why people love this line. I did a Tatcha haul during the Sephora sale and I’m obsessed with The Dewy Skin Cream. This cream will definitely come in handy during the colder months when I’m dealing with very dry skin. It also comes with a small spoon applicator (to prevent you from using dirty fingers in the jar) that is conveniently tucked away on top of the lid. I’m truly amazed at how luxurious clean beauty has become nowadays. I also purchased a set of skincare minis not long ago but I’m saving those for when I travel this summer.

Fleur & Bee Skincare: I did a recent review on this brand here, but I highly recommend this brand if you’d like to make the switch to using clean skincare but don’t want to break the bank. All of their products are perfectly priced under $35. The eye cream is my favorite.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5: This is a hydrating serum made of pure, vegan hyaluronic acid. It costs under $7, which is a steal. The formula itself is OK, but the consistency of the formula feels sticky. The drop applicator isn’t very strong either, the product is constantly seeping out. There are other hydrating serums I prefer but this isn’t a bad one to fall back on.

Caudalie: I own quite a few Caudalie products. It’s one of my favorite skincare brands, but it is a little pricey. My favorites include the Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet (perfect for spring and summer weather), Overnight Recovery Oil (it’s like a hydrating overnight mask that works while you sleep), and the Gentle Buffing Cream (a physical exfoliator that sloughs away dead cells without irritating my skin).

Indie Lee Toner: My favorite hydrating toner and it works wonders on my skin. I use it in the morning and at night and after I work out. My skin feels so clean and refreshed after using. You can shop it here and get 15% off, thanks to Follain’s 3-day sale!

Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist: I use this as a setting spray after I apply makeup and quick refresher throughout the day on the weekends. For some reason, if I apply it on my bare skin, my face turns red. I’m not sure what ingredient in the formula is bothering me but it’s only when I apply it on my bare skin so I just avoid doing that and I don’t have any issues. You can also get this 15% off during the Follain sitewide sale.

Drunk Elephant: This brand is so popular on social media that I wanted to try their clean skincare products for myself. I did splurge on their Sukari Babyfacial a year or so ago but it’s such a potent mask I don’t really use it very often. I own a few skincare minis and out of the bunch, I really like the B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum. The more I use it, the more I notice how much healthier my complexion looks and feels.

Hair & Body

Playa Every Day Shampoo: I’m very picky about my shampoos so I was fully prepared to not like this BUT THE SCENT. My only complaint is the packaging. There’s a teeny tiny hole for the product to be squeezed out of and because the shampoo formula is so thick, it just doesn’t work very well.  I also want to note, since I made the switch to clean shampoo, I feel like I have to use a clarifying shampoo and conditioner more often. Not necessarily a bad thing, just worth nothing.

Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant: I feel like I’ve talked about this on my blog numerous times but it’s really been a complete game changer. This was one of the first clean beauty products I ever started using. It took a few weeks for my armpits to adjust but it really does work. The Pure Vanilla scent is my favorite but right now I’m using the Vanilla Coconut one.

Herbivore Coco Rose Body Polish: Not pictured in my shelfie but I’m nearing empty because it’s smells SO good and it’s super moisturizing on my skin. Also included in the Follain sale that you can shop here!

Ten Over Ten Rose Cuticle Oil (not pictured): Still the best nail treatment I’ve ever splurged on. This comes in handy during the winter months when I’m dealing with ultra dry cuticles and my nails look terrible.

As for clean makeup, I haven’t really explored many brands or products. I’ve tried RMS and ILIA makeup and that’s about it. Do you have any clean, non-toxic makeup products you like? Let me know in the comments!
