Rare Beauty Review & Haul

I’m always a little skeptical about celebrity beauty brands but after watching so many YouTube videos, I was influenced to try some products from Selena Gomez’s new line, Rare Beauty. Scroll down for my Rare Beauty review!

Wearing Rare Beauty Matte Liquid Liner, Liquid Blush in Happy and Matte Cream Lipstick in Heroic.

Selena Gomez launched Rare Beauty with the intent of “breaking down unrealistic standards of perfection.” It’s all about feeling good about the makeup you wear without hiding what makes you unique. The brand is vegan, cruelty-free and offers reusable packaging, plus everything is priced under $30.

The current product line offers a variety of products for the face, lips and eyes. The range includes 48 shades of Light Touch Weightless Foundation and Concealer, a liquid blush (with shades in dewy and matte finishes), a primer, a luminizer, a face mist, and a Blot & Glow Touch Up Kit.

For lips and eyes – the brand launched 7 shades of Dewy Lip Balm, 12 shades of Matte Lip Cream, a Matte Liquid Liner, and a Brow Pencil and Gel Duo. Rare also launched a few beauty tools—two face brushes and a blending sponge.

Selena Gomez is a huge advocate for mental health services and one percent of the brand’s annual sales will go directly to the Rare Impact Fund. Another small but important detail is in the packaging— some products have a round lid-shape at the top, which is intended to help those with arthritis. All of this makes me love Selena even more!

When the brand launched in September, I went to my local Sephora to purchase the liquid blush in Bliss and that immediately left me wanting more so I ended up hauling a couple more products from their direct-to-consumer site.

While I usually always shop beauty through Sephora because of the free shipping, I will say purchasing directly from RareBeauty.com was a good shopping experience. I placed my order late Friday night and they arrived on my doorstep Tuesday afternoon. That is some fast shipping, considering all the shipping safety precautions during COVID-19. In addition to the products, everything came in a complimentary cloth drawstring bag and a cute branded postcard.

Here is my Rare Beauty review and haul:

Lip Souffle Matte Cream Lipstick

So I don’t reach for matte lipsticks often, mainly because most formulas end up accentuating my dry lips; however, this matte cream liquid lipstick is a dream for those who like a soft blotted lip look.

I purchased the shade Heroic, described as a ‘true berry.’ I love this color! It really does compliment my skin tone.

In terms of staying power, it truly lasted all day for me and there was no transfer to anything that touched my lips (like my mask and water bottle). It feels like I’m wearing nothing, and even when it started to fade in the evening, it still looks good.

Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Liner

I really didn’t need another liquid liner but you know, research, haha. I absolutely love the sleek packaging for the liner; however, the felt tip was much wider than I was expecting and it wasn’t as easy to control when attempting to do a winged look. I have small, almond shaped eyes so I prefer to start with small, thin strokes and then gradually build. That said, I may just need more practice with the liner so I can get comfortable. It does have a beautiful matte finish and lasting staying power.

Soft Pinch Liquid Blush

I have two shades of the liquid blush—Happy (cool dewy pink) and Bliss (pinky nude with a matte finish). I’m thoroughly impressed with the pigmentation and how easy it is to blend. Just a small dab goes a long way. Out of the three products I’ve tried, I think the liquid blush is definitely a must-have from the collection.

Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation

So many makeup aficionados were raving about this foundation so I splurged during a Sephora Family & Friends event. The Sephora SA shade matched me with 120C (light peach with cool undertones). For starters, the color match is good and the price is right. It feels very light on the skin, which I love, but I wish the formula was a little more hydrating for my dry skin. I really have to prep my skin prior to applying. In terms of coverage, I think it has a great medium coverage and for someone who doesn’t wear a ton of makeup, it’s a nice option, but if you want full-coverage this isn’t it.

Always An Optimist Illuminating Primer

I picked up the mini size since it was a little more cost friendly and I was curious to see how this gel primer pairs with the foundation. If you have normal to dry skin, you’ll definitely need a solid moisturizer and a hydrating base. I really love that it’s not heavy or sticky. This primer gives me a nice glow under the foundation. I highly recommend!

Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight

I keep telling myself, I don’t need anymore highlighters… I don’t need anymore highlighters. OK, one more can’t hurt, right? I purchased the shade Enchant (soft pink) and it looks so pretty on my skin. I love the doe foot applicator but it does take some finessing. Unlike other highlighters I use and love, this one doesn’t blend quite as easily with my finger as I had hoped. Is it the worst thing in the world? No, but this isn’t something I would buy more of or repurchase.
