Mask Magic or Bust? Origins Mask Primer

Origins Mask primer - Politics of Pretty

This week’s mask review is a little different. Apparently there’s a step we’re all missing in our masking routine. Enter pre-mask primers, specifically Origins mask primer. They’re supposed to help prep your skin to help mask performance but I’m curious to find out, is it the new must-have product or just a glorified toner? Read on to find out!

Origins Maskimer Skin-Optimizing Mask Primer

What it does: Just like any other primer in your beauty arsenal, this Origins mask primer is meant to improve spreadability and give you an even base while hydrating and boosting the skin’s radiance. It’s got a blend of conditioning agents and antioxidants to help nourish your complexion. Spritz onto your clean face from 10-12 inches away and then pat gently on the skin so it absorbs. Pair it with any non-peeling mask (sidebar—I think this is such a generic rule and I’m wondering, does that apply to clay masks?)

What it felt like: It’s equal parts gentle and hydrating. I also like the herbal scent. I paired this with Glossier Moisturizing Moon Mask (which is one of my favorite soothing face masks).

What I did while I masked: Unpacked a few boxes in my new apartment. I love love love the new place. So much more space, which my hubby and I greatly appreciate!

The results: A couple of spritzes gave me soft skin prior to applying the Glossier mask. It definitely made it easier to apply and rinse off. Was the Origins mask primer worth the hype though? $22 seems a bit steep for a mask primer and I’m still debating whether it’s worth it to invest your hard earned dollars on a pre-masking step. But here’s the thing—your weekly mask can’t work wonders for your skin if you don’t properly prep. What’s the point of foundation if you don’t apply primer? If it was under $15, I think it would be worth it but I could take it or leave it.

Have you tried this one or another mask primer? I’m curious to hear your thoughts! Let me know in the comments. Read more mask reviews here.
