Hairstyle How-To with District Sparkle’s Meaghan Moynahan

“It takes a pro to beat the DC heat especially when it comes to your mane. Take it from me, the DC native with the white girl ‘fro. It’s taken countless summers, a trillion Rite Aid store points, experimenting with some interesting products, and the perfect ‘Secret Weapon’ but I’ve finally mastered my summer hair situation. You’ll need a few items, about 20 minutes and some practice with your favorite curling iron to achieve my go-to retro loose curls. They’re quick, easy and perfect for those hot summer days!

I start with L’Oreal Everpure Reconstruct Shampoo & Moisturize Conditioner. I’ve tried more expensive and less expensive versions of this product but this is what I’ve found works best with my hair. It’s a great moisturizer without leaving my hair oily.

Next, I use the Moisturizing Mask from the same line. I’m telling you. In. Love.

After I towel dry I spritz in some TREsemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray and get to blow-drying.

About half way thru drying my locks I throw some Kerastase Elixir into the mix making sure the ends are completely saturated by the product.

After drying with a large round brush it’s time to curl! Separate your hair into multiple sections so it’s easier to curl. Start at the roots and work your way down to the end with the curling barrel (I use a 2″ and a 1-1.5″when I’m feeling beachy). For a messier look, don’t curl the ends of your hair- stop curling about 2/3 of the way down and let your ends be free! For my go-to curls I always curl the hair away from my face. To create a more beachy and messy look, alternate by section (curl one piece one way and the one right next to it the other way).

After I’m finished ravaging my hair with heat I slip a little John Frieda Secret Weapon into my hair to break up the look, tame flyaways and help prevent DC frizz.

Finally, I add as much L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray to the situation as humanly possible. In ‘strong hold’ with UV protection, of course. No, I do not hail from Texas but man, do I love me some hairspray. Courtney Kerr would be proud.

And that’s all there is to it! You don’t need to break the bank to create an effortless, summery look.
