For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been all about the top knot. Not a top knot fan? No worries. This week’s hair how-to is a messy low bun tutorial, an elegant alternative that still keeps the hair off your neck. I love that messy hairstyles are trending right now and I especially love that this can still look polished for those special occasions (just in time for wedding season!).
My trusty hairstylist and expert Anna Fazio has shared so many tips and tricks when it comes to DIY hairstyles. First, she created a gorgeous cotton candy top knot and then she taught me how to create a cute braided bun. Seriously, can I just keep her in my back pocket at all times? Now I understand why celebs never travel without their beauty entourage.
Here’s a quick break down of this messy low bun tutorial for you to try at home:
First, curl your hair, each side away from your face. Brush the curls with your fingers. Tease your hair a bit at the crown to get a voluminous look.
Spritz some dry shampoo or a texture spray to create texture and hold throughout your hair.
To start forming the bun, start rolling up chucks of the curls and secure by the nape of your neck with bobby pins.
Twist the sides and tuck them into the low bun. Lightly hairspray.

The pictures aren’t super clear :/
Maybe a video next time?
Hi Robin! Yes, a video for next time sounds like a great idea! To give some more context, the stylist is using bobby pins to secure parts of the hair and let it hang slightly by pinning at the nape. Similar to using a hair clip to bundle the hair at the bottom so the top pieces fall out. I hope this helps and sorry for the confusion!
Is it really as simple looked in pics? I always try and it also was done but after some time it mashed.
